Cold Sterile Solutions

Cold sterile solutions, also known as cold sterilants, are chemical solutions used to disinfect and sterilize medical and dental instruments at room temperature. Unlike autoclaving, which requires high heat and pressure, cold sterile solutions rely on powerful disinfectants to eliminate pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, from the surfaces of instruments.

Common Uses

Cold sterile solutions are particularly useful in situations where heat-sensitive instruments are involved. These might include:

Plastic Instruments: Certain dental tools and medical devices made of plastic can warp or degrade under the high temperatures of an autoclave.
Electronic Devices: Equipment that contains electronic components can be damaged by steam sterilization.
Immediate Use: When quick turnaround of instrument sterilization is needed and using an autoclave is impractical.
Types of Cold Sterile Solutions

Several types of chemicals are commonly used as cold sterilants:

Glutaraldehyde: A potent sterilant that effectively kills a wide range of microorganisms. It is often used in a diluted form and can be effective for extended periods.
Hydrogen Peroxide: A strong oxidizer that breaks down into water and oxygen, making it a relatively environmentally friendly option.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA): A high-level disinfectant with fewer fumes and a shorter activation time compared to glutaraldehyde.
Cold sterile solutions are an invaluable tool in the sterilization arsenal of dental and medical practices, particularly for instruments that cannot withstand the high temperatures of autoclaving.

Brands you like, Prices you’ll love

Monster Dental Supply carries name brand and generic dental cold sterile solutions like Pascal Banicide, Sironas Sporox II, and Young's Biocide. From glutaraldehyde to hydrogen peroxide options, Monster has many brands. The nice thing about Biocide and Sporox II is that they are pre-mixed, so you only need to use as needed rather than being scared to throw away extra mixed style cold sterilants! Though some cold steriles may be more expensive than others, all styles Monster Dental Supply sells are trustworthy and can be counted on.
